Dear
Dr. Liz,
On
July 1, 2010, Feline's Pride, a Buffalo-New
York-based producer of (normally) high-quality
pet foods, announced a NATIONWIDE, VOLUNTARY
recall of Feline's Pride Raw food with
ground bone for cats and kittens, Natural Chicken
Formula, Net Wt. 2.5 lbs. (1.13 kg., 40 oz.).
The recall is occurring because the company
does routine quality tests through a lab in
New Jersey and a report from that lab indicates
a POSSIBLE contamination with Salmonella.
Neither
the company nor the U.S. FDA have received any
reports of animals being infected.
The product is packaged in uncoded
plastic containers and sold frozen to private
consumers nationwide including a number of
veterinary practices. Once thawed, the
pet food has a shelf life of about 1 week.
The firm manufactures the pet food on an as-ordered
basis. This recall affects only those orders
placed and shipped from June
10 through June 17, 2010.
I always check and cross-reference
sources before writing any news releases and
alerts, and was quite surprised and personally
disappointed to find that the Feline's Pride
web-site as of today, July 12, 2010, 11:00
am EDT, contains no information about this
recall. The only cautions on the web-site
reference a temporary hold in shipping product
to Virginia. The primary sources for
the information in this article therefore
are the FDA web-site itself, and an email
from one of you forwarding an email from her
veterinarian!!! So, thank you for your help
and your support. The better informed we all
are, the better pet-parents we can be.
More
About Salmonella
Salmonella
affects human and non-human animals. There
is risk to humans and non-humans handling or
consuming any foods contaminated with salmonella.
Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after
having contact with any foods at risk for Salmonella
contamination. Also thoroughly wash any surfaces
exposed to such food products.
Salmonella
infections in pets produce symptoms such as
lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever,
vomiting, decreased appetite, and/or abdominal
pain. It is possible for an otherwise very healthy
animal to be infected and a be carrier, infecting
other animals, but not showing symptoms itself.
If your
pet has consumed the recalled product and
has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
The FDA
web-site states that consumers with questions
should contact Feline's Pride at (716) 580-3096,
Monday -Friday from 10 am - 4 pm EDT.
