Dear
Dr. Liz,
We
have several reports which we have confirmed
and have now extensively researched information
on an oral flea product, brand name
Comfortis®,
and its dangers. Comfortis®
was released late in 2007 by Eli Lilly and Company
to fill the need for an ultra-fast flea killing
tablet that lasts an entire month. Although
many people find it does exactly what it is
supposed to do, it is what it isn't supposed
to do, but does, that is the subject of this
News Alert.
Comfortis®
can have drastic and even fatal results
under certain circumstances and conditions.
Please read this Newsletter and pass it along
to everyone you know who has an animal and who
is using flea protection products.
Dog Blinded
Our first indication of danger came from
a WWAWPT Member, Jane, (thank you, Jane),
who emailed that a friend's dog had been blinded
as a direct result of the use of Comfortis®.
Nothing they had tried got rid of their Dalmation's
fleas. The vet prescribed Comfortis®:
"She gave one dose, and the dog WOKE UP BLIND
THE FOLLOWING DAY. The company (Elanco) is paying
for her dog to go to a dog opthamologist in
OKC & the testing on her retinas etc... The
vet feels bad, the girl feels guilty, the company
is paying, but the dog is still blind."
Person Writes that Two Dogs Died
A person writes of her two dogs who died as
a result of developing 7 of the 10 side effects
of the product. Both dogs were declared
very healthy by their vet before beginning use
of the product. The vet prescribed the product
for a "small flea problem." "One
dog developed what I'll call seizures near the
end and died just after the 3rd dose of Comfortis®.
The other dog died just 4 days later. The day
before the 2nd dog died I took him to the vet
where they ran blood and urine tests. I'm not
a medical person and don't remember the exact
terms but they compared his blood work from
just 3 months earlier and the decline in the
blood cell numbers were unbelievable to even
the vet."

Note: Comfortis®
works by causing the flea to seizure to death.
Company Information
The company's web-site states clearly
that Spinosad, brand name Comfortis®,
is known to cause blindness when combined with
Ivermectin (Ivomec, Heartgard, Heartgard Plus,
Acarexx, Iverheart Plus, Ivomec, and Milbemycin).
Their web-site further advises that although
the
most common adverse reaction reported is vomiting,
other adverse reactions reported during trials
include diarrhea, depression/lethargy, decreased
appetite, incoordination, disorientation, excessive
dilation of pupils, itching, trembling, excessive
salivation/drooling, and seizures.
Comfortis®
is NOT recommended for cats, puppies under 14
weeks, or pregnant or nursing females. The
product literature states that problems observed
during testing for the excluded groups included
loss of litter during pregnancy, poor weight
gain of puppies, and vomiting.
What
bothers me most about Comfortis®
is that ALL the dogs in the trials (yes, I found
and read the trial results after Jane emailed
me) experienced measurable increases in phospholipodosis
(vacuolation) of the lymphoid tissue.
DIPL (drug-induced-phospholipidosis) is a form
of toxicity. The only way to determine the degree
of toxicity of DIPL in humans and animals is
through tissue samples. A readily accessible
biomarker in the urine or blood isn't available
for routine phospholipidosis assessment yet.
DIPL affects and causes disease conditions in
the internal organs including the liver, kidneys,
lungs, etc. It blocks the cell's ability to
cleanse itself. Sometimes it is localized (e.g.,
eyes, lungs), sometimes it is quite wide-spread.
It is called "drug-induced-phospholipidosis"
because it IS drug-induced... and again, it
affects both human and non-human animals.
So what can you do?
#1.
Be wise. If you have a breed such as Brittany's
who are prone to seizures, use another product
or approach. If you have a dog who has
ever experienced a seizure, use another product
or approach.
#2. Dose all medicines correctly.
Do not overdose. Check the counter-indications
and adverse reactions with all drugs or medicines
you are giving your dogs. YOUR VETS DO
NOT ALWAYS KNOW, NOR DO THEY ALWAYS HAVE THE
TIME TO DO THIS RESEARCH!!! Comfortis®
is to be given orally once a month only to dogs
over 14 weeks of age and is "best given" on
a full stomach. Do your own research as well
as listening to your veterinary health professionals.
#3. Be sure you are using the product
designed for the animal species to whom you
are giving it. There are versions of the
product made for large animals. They are
less expensive than those made for dogs; however,
this researcher has found that there is too
much Spinosad in those products to be safe when
dosed to dogs.
Note:
I personally have never liked the idea of
systemic delivery of insecticides. (Systemic
= item that is absorbed into the blood stream).
And as all of you know, I prefer natural,
holistic methods whenever possible.

Dr. Liz was a
guest on the Talk'N'Angels live radio show with
simultaneous web-cast on June 10th. The
lovely and lively Talk'N'Angels co-hosts, Anne
and Rita, have guested some wonderful people including
Doreen Virtue. Dr. Liz spoke happily about
her work, did on-the-spot call-in animal communication
readings for people from Florida to New Jersey,
led everyone in a very powerful prayer for Mother
Earth, and created a high level of spiritual energy
throughout.
By wonderful non-coincidence, Anne, Rita, and
Dr. Liz all met in person when all three attended
the same summer solstice celebration on Sunday,
June 20th, in Cherry Hill, NJ. Dr. Liz helped
facilitate the celebration. She taught and
then conducted all attendees in a very beautiful
musical round, a song to Mother Earth for which
Dr. Liz wrote some of the lyrics. (Yep, Dr. Liz
can also be a lyricist and choral conductor).
