Dear Dr. Liz,
The earthquake's devastation in Haiti is unsettling even the most seasoned of rescue personnel and newscasters. By estimates released today, the death toll could top 100,000.
There is hope in that efforts have been mobilized world-wide to assist this frequently-hard-hit country, including "sniffer" dogs (see next story). Complications are arising in dispatching both rescue personnel and supplies. Prayers and grounded active support are needed. Please continue reading.

Rescue Dogs dispatched from Many Countries
|

As an important part of the Haiti Rescue effort, rescue dogs are accompanying teams dispatched already from the United States, China, France, Russia, Peru, Mexico, Taiwan, and Britain. Countries pledging rescue assistance include Spain, Iceland, Canada, Germany, and Venezuela. The dogs have as a primary assignment, sniffing to find victims in the rubble. The dogs are described as eager to be of service and are also offering a calming sense of balance and focus to their persons.

Prayers are needed:
* Please send prayers to the dogs and their handlers, that all be protected during the exposure to great suffering and open contagion they all now courageously face.

Prayers and Support for Haiti and her People
|
The videos available including those from film students in Jacmel, whose school building collapsed and yet who gathered 6 intact video cameras and one still camera and went to work to help document their people's condition, show pancake-flat devastation affecting all manner of structures, bodies lying on streets wrapped or covered in whatever is available, people in open fields with no shelter and scant food and water. Although much of the world is focused on Port-au-Prince, Jacmel is over 2-1/2 hours south of Port-au-Prince and is also devastated.
A huge issue now is getting the rescue personnel and supplies to those desperately needing them. Fuel shortages, vehicle shortages, confusion, and the disruption of even basic communication systems are significantly hampering well-intentioned efforts in this Creole-and-French speaking country which is about the size of the U.S. State of Connecticut.
Prayers are strongly needed now. Hurting the soul of the people is seeing so many of their family and friends dead or injured, seeing homes destroyed, hearing the cries of the bereaved and the wounded, smelling the dead in the Haitian heat, and knowing that their spiritual leader, the Archbishop of Port-au-Prince, was killed in the earthquake.
* Please pray that whatever blockages exist now, be released, so that rescue personnel and supplies can be smoothly and effectively dispatched to those needing them;
* Please pray that focus for all countries sending rescue personnel, be on those in need, and not politicking;
* Please pray for Haiti and her people, that the grace of unconditional love surround and embrace them in this time of desperate need.
